Dear Parents and Carers,

PTA  CHRISTMAS FAYRE NEWS
We are very pleased to announce that our wonderful PTA helped us to raise over £2600 for our school.  What a fantastic effort, as this amount was clear profit made, after all expenditure had been accounted for!  We would like to express heartfelt thanks for all the hard work, which helped to make this event a huge success.  We would also like to say how much we appreciate the support received by everyone who visited the Fayre and helped us to raise such a huge amount of money for our school funds. THANK YOU!!

FUND RAISING FOR WATER BOTTLES
The children raised £728.35 through sponsorship during their business initiative week.  This will be used to provide all pupils with a high quality water bottle to be used in school.  These will be distributed in the New Year.  Well done everyone, and many thanks to all who supported the pupils by sponsoring their activities!

ECO TEAM NEWS
Mrs Hawksworth would like to thank all the children of the Eco Team.  They have worked so hard this year with all of our Eco activities.  Many thanks also to Mrs Horne and the Bird Feeding Club.  Lots of different types of birds have been seen in our school grounds, which is very encouraging!
Merry Christmas everyone!

SCHOOL MEALS
The cost of school meals for the next half term (January to February half-term) will be £51.80, £1.85 per day and £9.25 per week.  If you wish to pay for the full term (January until Easter) the total cost will be £105.45.

SPECIAL SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT
Congratulations to one of our Year 6 pupils, Benjamin Jamieson, who has been selected to play for the City of Birmingham Primary Schools.  The first match to be played will be against Leeds very soon, and Ben is proud to say that his name appears in the squad details along with Whitehouse Common Primary School!  Well-done Ben, and good luck for your first match!

RELIGIOUS CELEBRATIONS
We are very interested to hear how families within our school celebrate various Religious Festivals as part of their beliefs and culture.  If you would like to come in to talk to the children, either in a class, or even in an assembly, please come in to school and speak to Miss Breeze, our RE co-ordinator, who will arrange a suitable time for you to visit.

ATTENDANCE
Please remember to phone the absence line, before 9.15am, to inform the school if your child is ill giving details of their illness and a contact phone number.  It is also very important that a “Term Time Leave Request Form” is completed at least six weeks prior to the leave being needed, so that consideration can be given to this request.  Below is a table, which shows the impact absences from school have over a school year.

ATTENDANCE DURING ONE SCHOOL YEAR EQUALS DAYS ABSENT WHICH IS APPROXIMATELY WEEKS ABSENT WHICH MEANS THIS NUMBER OF LESSONS MISSED
95% 9 days 2 weeks 50 lessons
90% 19 days 4 weeks 100 lessons
85% 29 days 6 weeks 150 lessons
80% 38 days 8 weeks 200 lessons
75% 48 days 10 weeks 250 lessons
70% 57 days 11.5 weeks 290 lessons
65% 67 days 13.5 days 340 lessons

Children are required to attend school for 190 days each year and the target attendance for Whitehouse Common is 96.5%.

LATEST NEWS FROM CLASSES

RLS
RLS had a wonderful trip to Chapmans Hill Farm last week. In the morning we all made butter using cream and a lot of whisking! In the afternoon we fed the sheep, pigs and chickens and we were able to stroke all the animals. It was fantastic! This week we practised hard for our Christmas performance and we hope you enjoyed the show!  Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all the Reception staff and children!
1JS
1JS are very excited about Christmas!  We have enjoyed our Nativity production and have done a fantastic job as angels!  Well done to all of our actors and narrators who spoke clearly and confidently.  We had a fun time together at our Christmas party this week, and have written letters to Father Christmas.  We hope that he has seen our good behaviour so that he can bring us our exciting presents on Christmas Eve!
2MW
2MW have been working really hard in the run-up to Christmas. In Science, the children have had lots of fun finding out about different circuits during their Electricity topic. In Literacy, we have produced some lovely acrostic poems and descriptions about Christmas. Mrs Clark has worked really hard in Art, and the boys and girls have produced some excellent Lowry art work for display.
The children were excellent during the Christmas production and they sang, acted and narrated really well.  We would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Mr Worth and Mrs Clark!
3FM
3FM have really enjoyed rehearsing and performing our Christmas production. This week we have been enjoying lots of art & craft activities to get us into the mood for Christmas! Happy Christmas everyone!
4HB
In 4HB we have been doing lots of work on poetry through Visual Literacy, looking at the film Labyrinth. We have been dividing, using the chunking method in maths. We are enjoying our preparations for Christmas. We have even made Christmas Pudding cards and have been opening our advent calendar each day.
5AT
Year 5 have had an enjoyable week performing in their Christmas play, which I am sure you will agree was fantastic! We also enjoyed having a swing band into the school to get us into the Christmas spirit, whilst singing along to some very famous carols. We hope you all have a lovely Christmas and a Happy new year!
6VH
6VH have had an extremely busy Autumn Term!  We enjoyed our visit to Safeside, and learnt a lot about safety.  The children all deserve a well-earned rest after their hard work learning lines and songs for the Christmas production.   We are most impressed with their World War 2 history projects, demonstrating how much they have enjoyed this topic. Merry Christmas to you all!

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
Following an unfortunate incident on school grounds recently, when a grandparent of one of our pupils was injured, THERE IS TO BE STRICTLY NO CYCLING OR SCOOTING ANYWHERE ON OUR SCHOOL PREMISES. Once arriving at the school gates, cycles and scooters MUST be walked to the cycle sheds.  For the safety of everyone who uses our premises, PLEASE adhere to these rules at all times.  Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.

WINTRY WEATHER CONDITIONS
As snow has been forecast, please stay tuned to you local radio stations just in case there are any school closures.  We really hope that this won’t happen for the last day of term before Christmas, but one never can tell.  It is always a useful reminder anyway in case we have inclement weather early in the New Year.

SCHOOL RE-OPENING REMINDER
Just a reminder that school closes at the normal time tomorrow, Friday, 18th December (weather permitting), and will re-open to pupils on Tuesday, 5th January 2010.  Please note that Monday, 4th January will be a training day for staff only.

Finally, thank you to everyone for all your support this year, and also a big thanks to the children for all their hard work throughout the Autumn term.  We hope that you all have a wonderful, peaceful and restful Christmas with your families.  A very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year to you all from myself and all the staff at Whitehouse Common School.

Kind regards,

DEBBIE ALLEN
HEADTEACHER
