Dear Parents and Carers,

WEATHER CONDITIONS
Many thanks to everyone for striving to get to school through these testing weather conditions. Unless you hear from us, the School will be OPEN.  In the rare event of the School being closed, we will send a text and update the school website with the relevant information. We would aim to inform you of this as early as practically possible.  Local radio stations will also be contacted, but it cannot be guaranteed that the information will be announced on their news bulletins due to the high demand.

WALKING BUS
For health & safety reasons, due to the ongoing weather conditions, the Walking Bus will remain postponed until further notice.

FAIR PROCESSING NOTICES/PRIVACY NOTICE
This is a reminder that these notices, summarising the type of information held about pupils, why it is held, and the third parties to whom it may be passed onto, are available from the school office or on the school website.

ARRIVING ON SITE
It is wonderful to see children exercising and coming to school on their scooters and bikes.  However, in the interests of safety for everyone, please ensure that your child does not ride their bike or scooter within the school premises.

WATER BOTTLES
Well done to all the classes for raising the money for the school water bottles!
The water bottles have arrived in school and these will be distributed to classes.  Each water bottle will have your child’s name on it.

DOGS
Please note that for health & safety reasons dogs are not allowed anywhere on the school premises.

SPANISH STUDENTS
In our continuing efforts to develop our Spanish links, we are very lucky to be able to welcome two Spanish students to our School.  Ansum and Martha from Barcelona are supporting the class teachers in Year 1 and Year 2 for the next four weeks.

SPANISH CLUB
We are running a Spanish learning language club, which has just commenced on Tuesday afternoons between 3:45-4:45pm in the ICT Suite. There are places available, and if you would like you and your child to attend please contact the Acorns office for details.

LUNCHTIME SUPERVISOR VACANCY
We would like to advise you that we currently have a vacancy for a Lunchtime Supervisor position.
If you are interested in working with young children, this offers an exciting opportunity working together with a dedicated team of staff. For further details about this position, or if you would like an application form, please telephone one of our school offices.

HEALTHY LIVING
May we take this New Year opportunity to remind you that we have a ‘Healthy Snacks Policy’ in school. This applies to all break time snacks. Parents and children were consulted in the development of this policy. Children have told us that it is much easier for them to eat healthily if everyone around them is doing the same! This factor was key in their belief in the ‘Healthy Snacks Policy’.

We are holding a theme week in school commencing on the 22nd February. We are aiming to invite visitors to school, hold workshops and provide a wide range of learning opportunities across the school. If any parent feels they have skills/ideas they could contribute towards this please contact Mrs Sotomayor. Thank you.

SCHOOL MEAL MENUS
Whilst on the subject of healthy eating, we are enclosing details of the school meals being offered over the next four weeks.  Please refer to the attached sheet.

WORKING WALLS
We informed you in September that when visiting classrooms, you may notice that some of the displays may be less formal than you may traditionally expect to see in school. The working walls that were introduced for mathematics, literacy and science may show examples of draft work, mind maps, edited work, pupil ideas, models of excellence, etc.  May we take this opportunity to share with you that we are really pleased with the impact of our ‘working walls’ in school. Children are using them to support their learning and their thought processes throughout lessons. The working walls also act as links to prior learning. We have had really positive feedback from children and teachers. Governors on our Curriculum Committee, who visited the school for a ‘learning walk’ on Tuesday evening also praised the effectiveness of this initiative.

ECO TEAM
The Eco Team have asked each class, through the Pupil Council, to consider how we can make the school more eco friendly.  At our meeting next week we shall be looking forward to hearing about all the ideas that the Pupil Council feed back.

RECEPTION CLASS RJE
Mrs Edwards will be commencing her maternity leave after the Easter half term.  We are very pleased to let parents of children in RJE know that Mrs Edmunds will be covering the class on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays and Mrs Towers will be covering the class on Thursdays and Fridays.  As many parents know, Mrs Edmunds is employed by Whitehouse Common School and is currently teaching in Nursery.  Mrs Towers is an experienced and qualified teacher who has taught at Whitehouse Common for a number of years.  Both teachers are familiar with the children in RJE.

MUSIC
The Sutton Coldfield Youth Choir started meeting last term. Although this is for Year 9 children and upwards, some of our pupils may have brothers/sisters/family members who are interested. This new group meets at Four Oaks Primary School on Mondays, from 4.30-6pm. The aim is to develop vocal skills, build confidence and work towards performances – but above all, have fun!  If you are interested, please visit the following website for more information on how to join.  www.suttoncoldfieldyouthvoices.weebly.com Alternatively, please call the musical directors Richard Jeffries or Liz Birch on 0121 675 2685.

PTA NEWS!
The PTA are planning an ‘80’s Adult’s Disco’ for early March….details to follow! (Might be worth working on those dance moves in preparation for the event!)

PUPIL-DESIGNED CHRISTMAS CARDS
The school would like to thank all parents who purchased Christmas cards, T-shirts and mugs with their child’s personal design just before Christmas.  We apologise for the delay in receiving some of the items ordered, but hope that you were all pleased with the goods when they eventually arrived.  We sold £1157 worth of goods through this scheme, which in turn earned £525.75 for our school funds.  This is a magnificent amount of money, which will benefit our children immensely!  Once again many thanks for your support, it is very much appreciated.

SCHOOL NURSE
Our current school nurse, Mrs Val Fowmes, has asked us to pass on her contact details to parents.  If you wish to speak with her regarding your child, please telephone 0121 465 5232.

WARM CLOTHING REMINDER
As this cold weather continues, please could we just remind parents to ensure their children arrive at school suitably dressed to keep out the cold, as pupils will still be spending some time outside during the school day.  Sensible strong footwear is also recommended.  If children come to school wearing wellingtons, please could they bring some school shoes to change into when they arrive.  Many thanks.

Stay safe and have a good weekend!

Regards,

DEBBIE ALLEN
HEADTEACHER.
